Buckle your bucket before heading out for a ride: Lloyd RCMP

As the summer months create ample weather for cyclists, the Lloydminster RCMP is reminding the public of some routine tips which they say can make a world of difference when it comes to safety.

People out on their bikes are urged to follow all applicable road tips as if they were in a motor vehicle. This means stopping for stop signs, pedestrians, and sharing the road with motor vehicles by riding as close to the right curb as possible.  It’s also the law that anyone under 18 should be wearing a Canadian Safety Association approved helmet while riding their bike, scooter or skateboard. That’s also strongly recommended for adults as well.

The RCMP adds that other sports helmets, such as hockey helmets, don’t provide the same amount of full head protection, so they should not be used as a substitute for a bike helmet.

If a kid is found out riding, at the skate park or at Bud Miller Park riding without a helmet, parents could face a hefty fine under the Traffic Safety Act.

Riders should also expect more bicycle patrols out in the summer at both Bud Miller Park and downtown.
