Alberta RCMP launching new online reporting tool this month

Lloydminster residents will soon have a new way to report crimes to the RCMP.

RCMP detachments across Alberta are implementing a new online crime reporting program. Residents will be able to report the following crimes online:

  • Damage/mischief to property under $5,000
  • Theft of bicycle under $5,000
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Theft from vehicle under $5,000
  • Lost property

Following the report, a police officer will contact the person who submitted it within five business days. Corporal Deanna Fontaine with the Western Alberta District RCMP says the tool will help open up emergency lines as it is mainly focused on property crime.

“If a member of the public is able to report this crime online then it frees up that space in the queue that would no longer be required for an emergency call taker at our emergency operations centre.”

Incidents being reported will also have to satisfy the following conditions:

  • No witnesses or suspects
  • Item(s) lost or stolen must cost less than $5,000
  • Vandalized property will cost less than $5,000 to repair
  • There are no items involving personal identity, firearms, license plates or decals

If the crime falls out of the conditions then residents are asked to call the local detachment.

“We take all of our reports seriously and crimes reported online will be treated the same. This online reporting mechanism will allow our emergency call takers to focus on those calls that would affect human lives.”

The program is being piloted in Grande Prairie, Red Deer and Airdrie this week and will be rolling out province-wide including Lloydminster by June 15.
