Lloydminster’s Canada Day going virtual for 2020

The City of Lloydminster is making sure the show goes on for Canada Day.

The Country’s 153rd birthday will look a little different in the Border City, however. Virtual festivities have been planned for Canada Day. These include a house decorating competition, which people can upload online on the City’s website until June 25th, after which the best-decorated house will be voted on.

There will also be a weeklong scavenger hunt starting June 27th, showcasing 24 Lloydminster landmarks adorned with Canadian flags. Residents get 24 clues, and if they find anywhere from five to all twenty-four, they could win prizes.

City of Lloydminster Manager of Program and Events Cindy Rekimowich says they had to balance the events with COVID-19 safety measures.

“We brainstormed with our program team and came up with ideas of what people could do safety and still enjoy the day. We looked at what other communities were doing, and kind of followed suit.”

For July 1st itself, there will be local artists, features and kids concerts for people to take in. They will be available on the City’s social media channels.

In addition to the weeklong events, there is an activity book available on the City’s website for kids and families to do. Inside will also be a bingo card of activities, which if families complete, they could win prizes as well. Home Depot, All About Bouncing, Bioclean, Lloydminster Nissan, MNP, Canadian Tire and Guardian Plumbing and Heating have all stepped up to provide prizes.

Reckimowich says the sponsors of the event have been very understanding, and this will help them go ahead.

“Everybody we asked came to the table, and they understand the situation we’re in and wanted to make it fun for families to participate. So it’s just a little bit of incentive to get those families out there so they can enjoy the day, and enjoy the week. We’ve spread it out so they can enjoy the week, and everybody’s not in the same location at the same time.”

People can submit their House Designs on the city’s website.  Activities and scavenger hunt locations can be sent in via the City’s events email.
