Community Services Building teardown starts

The tearing down of Lloydminster’s Community Services Building has begun today.

The first phase of demolition at the site, which is located at 4419 52 Avenue, will be abating the building and removing hazardous materials from the area. From there, demolition will begin, and finally the rehabilitation of the area. Municipal leaders are currently determining how to site will be repurposed after this process happens.

Council voted to decommission the building back in June 2019, after learning it would cost over $2 Million to bring it back up to building and safety codes. Instead, they’re investing in demolishing the site for green space, which will cost  $185,500.

Drivers and pedestrians are advised to follow all posted signs and be cautious driving through because heavy machinery will enter and leave the site frequently. The project is expected to be done by August 8th, 2020 weather permitting.

The Community Services Building was originally built in 1951 by the Lloydminster Public School Division. It held Winston Churchill School until 1991. From there, it held non-profits and community organizations like the Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce, Lloydminster Construction Association, Lloydminster Learning Council and the Lloydminster Bobcats.
