People will be able to enjoy a taste of barbecue, all in support of a local cause.
Border City Connects has announced the location for their first incarnation of Ribfest, which will run from August 21st to 23rd. It’s going to be held at the Lloydminster Exh Grounds and will feature four “Rib-Masters,” Billy’s BBQ, Camp 31, Buckeye BBQ and Pistol Pete’s. The event will be broken up into four separate lanes that people can walk up to get their eats while also maintaining physical distancing under COVID-19 guidelines.
Marketing Manager for Border City Connects Aaron Buckingham says that while people will have to grab and go, he believes people will make return trips to try “the best of the best” when it comes to BBQ and they can do as many as they want.
“When you go to Ribfest, you’re getting a full plate. You’re getting ribs, you’re getting slaw, you’re getting corn-bread. So one time through is the way it’s going to go. The next time you come, you can go in the other lane, up to four times, come up to eight times, whatever you want to do.”
This event is the first of many Ribfests to come, as Border City Connects plans to make it a large annual fundraiser to cover operational costs. In addition to the Lloydminster Handivan bussing service they offer, they also drive their clients to and from medical appointments, both within the city and further away to places like Edmonton or Saskatoon. They also provide several services for seniors in the community.
Buckingham explains that in addition to being a fundraiser at a needed time, this year’s Ribfest is a preview of things to come as health guidelines become less strict.
“As things change, we’re hoping to have a full-on Ribfest next year and in the years forward, with beer gardens, bands, they whole Ribfest experience.”
Ribfest is looking for sponsors as well, and people interested are encouraged to get in touch either online or by giving them a call.
