The Lloydminster Youth Council is recruiting Lloydminster youth in Grades 9 to 12 interested in participating in community projects.
Applications are now open for the 2020-2021 youth council session. Youth council members will take part in events and projects focused on engaging young people in the community.
Ashley Wachira, Co-ordinator for the Lloydminster Youth Council, says the projects differ from year to year based on the interests of the members.
“Quite a few of them wanted to work on their public speaking and presentation skills, so we figure out what the group wants and we’ll do that again this year. We’ll figure out what these specific individuals want to work on and then we’ll have different people from the community come in and lend their expertise.”
The council provides members an opportunity to develop their leadership skills and get involved with community outreach.
“Leadership isn’t always going up and speaking to a group of people sometimes it’s behind the scenes. We try and get a variety of people in to appeal to their different strengths and interests.”
She says they usually plan four or five events a year, but this year the group will have to change how they plan events due to the pandemic.
“This year, we’re not sure what our events are going to look like because of COVID and the social distancing protocols that have to be in place, but we are definitely still trying to come up with creative ways to get our youth and youth in the surrounding area involved.”
The youth council works with the municipal government as well as the Lloydminster and Area Drug Strategy. Previous members of the council took part in providing recommendations to the city on cannabis regulation.
The deadline to apply is September 24th. Applicants will be called the next day to set up an interview for the following week.
