Strong winds and snow expected to hit large parts of the Prairies this weekend

Lloydminster residents will see a wild swing in weather by the end of this week.

Environment Canada meteorologist Blaine Lowry says snow is expected to drop during the day Saturday and will continue into Sunday.

“In Lloydminster, it’s going to be interesting. It’s most likely going to be on the northwestern edge of any snowfall that does come. There’s some indications of the potential of 10 to 15 cm of snow by the end of the day Sunday.”

He says the snowfall will be paired with 50 to 60 km/h winds from the north on the same day and taper off in the evening in the Lloydminster area. The snow comes from a low pressure system building in Wyoming which will move north towards southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba.

“It’s quite an intense low so the area of effect is quite large even though the lows way off to the southeast of Lloydminster there can still be impacts in the area.”

He mentions the snowfall amount isn’t abnormal for the Lloydminster area for this time of year, but it will be for other parts of Saskatchewan. He adds conditions will get worse further east of Lloydminster and asks drivers to be prepared for serious conditions this weekend.

“Temperatures are looking to be in the minus 5 range, so when the snow starts on Saturday it will be closer to zero and it may be wet to start then as it cools off it may become less wet and be more prone to blowing around on Sunday.”

Lowry advises those with plans to head to North Battleford or Saskatoon on Sunday to postpone them for another time.
