RCMP reminding people of importance of car seats

As the winter weather hits, the RCMP is reminding everyone to be buckled up, including the especially young.

As the road conditions worsen due to snow and ice, drivers are being reminded that child safety seats, when used correctly, can save lives and prevent injuries.  Under the law in Alberta, kids under six or weighing less than 18 kg (40 lb) need to be properly restrained in a car seat at all times.  It’s also highly recommended that children over six be in a car seat until they reach the maximum height and weight (as stated by the manufacturer) and a seat belt fits properly.

When someone buys a car seat, they need to get one that has a Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS) sticker so that it meets national standards. It’s also advised that people don’t buy pre-owned car seats as they may be damaged, recalled, or expired, and may not meet current safety standards.

“Last November, Alberta RCMP issued 12 tickets to motorists for failing to properly restrain young passengers,” says Supt. Gary Graham of the Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. “Your children look to you to keep them safe on the roads – always take the time to buckle them up and make their safety your priority.”

According to Government of Alberta statistics, when used properly, child safety seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% and the risk of serious injury by 67%.
