Alberta government focusing on intersection safety

January is intersection safety month in Alberta.

The government says 3 of 5 improper driver actions in fatal accidents happen at intersections, from things likes making a hasty left turn across on-coming traffic, making rolling stops, and running yellow lights.

“Intersection safety is a large concern for the Lloydminster RCMP. Many collisions happen in the border city at intersections,” says Grant Kirzinger, Constable with the Lloydminster RCMP.

“We urge drivers to pay attention and to always slow down when you’re approaching intersections, whether it be a stop sign, a four-way stop, or any type with a yield sign on it.”

Kirzinger warns, “Now that it’s winter, intersections become even more dangerous, as people are having difficulty stopping, as roads are icier.”

About 86 per cent of deaths on the roads and 40 per cent of serious collisions involve activity at intersections.
