City guiding residents on how to avoid standing water flooding

With temperatures warming up, the City is guiding residents on how to avoid standing water flooding and get it in the storm sewer system.

The melting snow and ice moving into the sewers could be hindered by multiple thaw-freeze cycles this year, which can create additional ice build-up stopping the natural flow of water from a property.

Residents are recommended to check their internal and external sump pumps are working, performing maintenance if needed. Discharge hoses should be free of ice and directed away from any building foundation or wall, with the end being a minimum of two meters away.

People can also look to see if a check valve or backflow preventer installed and that it’s working.  Having one will help limit the volume of water pumped because it won’t be able to flow back once it is pumped.

They should also routinely check for ice and snow build-up on the discharge line, also removing it from the sides of the building foundation or walls. This will ensure downspouts and gutters are clear for backfill’s thawing.

The City says that being prepared now can mitigate the possibility of flooding or issues in the spring, and also during the inclement weather of the summer months.
