SPS to conduct sudden death investigation of North Battleford woman in custody

Battlefords RCMP have brought in the Saskatoon Police Service to conduct an investigation after a North Battleford woman in their custody passed away.

Around 4:30 on March 24th, a 30-year-old woman was arrested without incident and brought into the North Battleford Police Detachment in connection with an ongoing investigation. While she was there, officers determined she needed medical attention.

She was taken to Battlefords Union Hospital at 7:15 PM, the RCMP says, and at 10 PM an officer noted that she was in medical distress. Lifesaving efforts were attempted by the officer, who also called for hospital staff support, however, she did pass away at 10:30 PM.

The RCMP has notified and offered Victims’ Services to the family of the woman, whose name has not been released at this time.

As part of the RCMP’s independent external investigation policy, the Saskatchewan detachment has brought in the Saskatoon Police Service to conduct the investigation into her death.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice will appoint an independent observer and the Saskatchewan Health Authority is also consulting on this investigation.
