Holy Rosary students grab gold at Alberta Provincial skills and advance to Nationals

Some Holy Rosary High School photography and videography students have a golden ticket to represent the region at the Canada National Skills contest.

The news of the win came down last night, May 13th, as Alberta Skills informed school officials that their teams had won gold in videography and silver in photography. The contests were done virtually at the end of April.

The duo of Mackenzie Decrescenzo and  Sierrah Bennett copped gold for their video, and  Kyla Morin brought home the silver in photography.

Skye Ferguson, Communications, Media and Photography teacher who coached the team for Photography and Communications media at Alberta Skills has worked with these students since Grade 8. She explains the training process to prepare for the contest.

“So for video, I like to call it a skeleton. We create a skeleton. So, how their video can progress within a minute. The

goal is that whatever their skeleton is we can apply any topic to it. They kind of know the basis. You need to have a problem. Present it within your video. You need to solve the problem. You need to have a story. Like story is the biggest thing when it comes to video. How you can tell your whole story and get it across in a minute.”

The video topic dealt with a student heading to school when something goes wrong. The students do their projects in Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects.

In photography, they faced several topics including taking photos without editing, a reveal using a mask and a mystery object, which was footwear.

Ferguson says the next steps will be to prepare for nationals with a critique of their provincial medal performance video.

“We are going to do a practice video. We are basically going to critique their video that they submitted for Provincials and just go down to the fine tuning. What can they do better. What mistakes they made. Just a lot of reflection.”

The Canada National Skills contest will be held virtually on May 26 and the awards will be on June 15th.

Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
