Lloydminster Airport granted federal safety funding

Some safety upgrade money for the Lloydminster Airport has been earmarked by the Federal Government.

In an announcement Tuesday, the Canadian Government laid out plans to provide $20 million total via Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program for airports across Alberta.

This money, the feds say, will allow for projects including runway and taxiway repairs or rehabilitation, lighting enhancements, purchasing snow clearing equipment and firefighting vehicles and installing wildlife fencing.

Here in Lloydminster, a total of $105,000 will be invested for a runway de-icer.  Runway de-icing causes frozen deposits of snow or ice to melt. It will also prevent freezing or re-freezing of liquid on the surface in the first place by lowering its freezing point.

Jim Carr, Minister and Special Representative for the Prairies says this will help people who depend on their local airports not only for personal travel and business but also for community resupply of essential goods and access to routine and emergency medical care in larger centres.

For 2021-2022, Transport Canada has allocated ACAP funding to 63 airports for 86 safety-related projects for all essential air services.
