SaskEnergy will be performing a two-day controlled natural gas flare near Unity.
The flare will take place on July 13th and 14th, running each day from 8 AM to 4 PM and is so SaskEnergy can perform maintenance on the natural gas line system.
During that time, natural gas will be released from gas line in a controlled burn. While the gas line is isolated from the rest of the system, flaring removes the remaining gas from the line.
Residents and drivers may see a 20-foot flare coming from the stack, which is attached to SaskEnergy’s infrastructure on the west side of Unity south of Highway 14, which is adjacent to the Unity Compressor Station.
SaskEnergy explains that the flaring process is an industry standard practice when gas needs to be released from a line, and it reduces the carbon footprint of the vented gas by 85 per cent.
The area around the flare will be supervised to ensure public safety, and SaskEnergy says the Town, local RM and fire department have all been made aware its happening.
There will be no disruptions to natural gas service in the area, SaskEnergy adds.
