Another Your Voice event has come and gone.
The 2nd event was held at ES Laird Middle School on Tuesday, February 23rd, and one of the big items on the list of topics up for discussion was the potential partnership proposed between the City and EPCOR to finance and execute the creation of the new wastewater treatment plant.
Members of the community had many questions including, what would become of the old wastewater treatment plant?
“Basically we would build a new facility. There’ll be a new building and the existing one will still remain in place. And so, it’ll be the first place that the sewage comes into, is the existing building, and then additional treatment will be provided through the new building,” explains Deputy CAO Kirk Morrison.
To help answer questions and explain EPCOR’s role in the proposed deal, spokesperson for EPCOR, Tim le Riche attended the event as well. le Riche said that most of the feedback he received had been positive, and that above all, people were wondering how the change would impact the rates.
Morrison clarified that the rates would increase but due to the nature of creating a utility corporation, the growth would be gradual, rather than overnight. He also said that more concrete details regarding the proposal would be coming in March.
“This is just the kind of opportunity that EPCOR looks for. It’s a chance for us to help a neighbour establish and develop a new water business,” says le Riche.
