Mayor updates on Hwy 16 rehab and Fire Hall One construction

With City crews getting ready to flip over rehabilitation work from the south to the north side of Highway 16, Mayor Gerald Aalbers is pleased with the progress.

Aalbers had a look in on the project and says the asphalt is being laid on the north side.

“That will continue to be laid until they have the completion of the paving on the north side and we are hoping that’s happening in the next couple of days. Then once that is done, there will be line painting that will need to occur right away. I understand that’s all been taken into account. Then once that’s done, they will flip the barriers over and there’s already equipment staged on the south side on College Drive.”

Aalbers says it’s moving forward even as some residents had asked about the crews being given the two long weekends off.

“As everyone can appreciate, you can’t work seven days a week continuously. I know some people in the oil and gas industry do it everyday, but in the road construction industry, they do allow and there was allowances made in the contract.”

Aalbers indicated that the City’s engineers will be updating further as to when the work will move to the south side.

On the construction of the new Fire Hall number one, Aalbers said work is going ahead on the site with possible completion in early 2022.

“Construction is moving forward. Tenders continue to be reviewed for sub-trades and people working on the facility and progress is being made.”
