SHA to suspend select services to recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The Saskatchewan Health Authority says they will be suspending select services so their staff can recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

All SHA in-scope staff will have September 30th, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation recognized and paid as a statutory holiday, as is outlined in their collective bargaining agreement. The SHA also notes they recognize and acknowledge the history and legacy of residential schools and honours the survivors, their families and communities.

As staff take the day off to reflect, the SHA explains, some services will be suspended. These include any booked surgeries, procedures and patient visits on this day in both acute and community settings. Any procedures that were planned for that day will be rescheduled.

Private physician offices may choose to be open but clinics staffed with SHA employees will not be open. Any services that are provided on other statutory holidays, such as emergency departments, will continue as normal, however.

The SHA says that the suspensions will have a negative impact on our patients, many of whom have been waiting long periods of time for surgeries and procedures, but explains that it is important for everyone to recognize the significance and meaning of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The SHA also notes they’ll be encouraging of their staff, whether they are working this day or not, to take time to reflect and learn more about the experience and history of residential school survivors.
