Covid protocols in place, students at Jack Kemp Elementary school celebrated Halloween with a parade on Friday and livestreamed their fun to the Jubilee Seniors Home.
Staff and students came in their groups to the school gym and each took turn as they paraded in front of the camera to make sure that they transmit some Halloween fun for the senior community at the Jubilee.
Fifth grader Calli Leschinski who was dressed as a banana shared that one of her friends was dressed as an alien and another as a wolf. In the midst of their fun she is grateful to be able to share their Halloween excitement with the seniors.
“I feel like we are including the elderly who don’t get to see their grandkids and great grandkids or even kids, because of the COVID-19 restrictions, so I am grateful that I can come and see you all.”
Apart from the livestream option, staff also took a few groups of kids over to the Jubilee and led a smaller parade outside the home for the benefit of the residents who were able to watch from the porch.
Grade Five teacher Stephanie Groat said they wanted to do something for the residents as the school has an ongoing relationship with the Jubilee seniors and also a big piece of the education at Jack Kemp is a sense of belonging.
“We want our students to feel like they not only belong in our school, but in our community and fill their bucket by doing things for the people in our community and the Jubilee is part of our community.”
Groat added the school has always had activities with the Jubilee residents and over the last two years that has become impacted with the restrictions due to COVID.
