Lloyd rowers punch their ticket to summer games

Four Lloydminster juniors are on Team Saskatchewan for Canada’s Summer Games in Ontario.

As well, the Lloydminster Rowing Club is bringing the boats to the city this weekend as they invite people to ‘Come and Try Out’ at Bud Miller Park.

Michelle Lopez who has been president for the last four years is keen to have people gain an insight to the sport especially as more events continue to fill the community calendar.

“There is a sign-up online and it’s membership.rowingcanada.org/joincomeandtry. However, if it’s something you just want to come out and see what’s happening. Come have a look. We will have some waivers and we do have a few spots left.”

The event is being held in conjunction with Rowing Canada this Saturday June 4th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to anyone from ages 12 and up.

Lopez is also excited for their junior rowers who will be representing at Canada’s Summer Games in August.

“So that’s a huge accomplishment for our small club. We’re getting started with water season for both the juniors and the masters and we are really excited to have a full time coach out for seven-weeks. So we are going to have lots of camps announced very soon.”

Lopez says the four members of the junior high performance group heading to St. Catherines, Ontario this August are Elijah Lopez, Shelby Lane, Liam Gilby and Jonah Lopez.

The club is usually practising at Killarney Lake which is just over two-kilometres east of Sandy Beach Regional Park, but will be bringing their gear to the lake at Bud Miller for the Saturday tryout.

More details can be found on their social media.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
