Lloydminster electoral district change for discussion in September

A shift in the federal electoral map is being proposed that could affect where Lloydminster is presently included as part of the Lakeland riding in Alberta.

If the change goes through Lloydminster and Vegreville will become part of the Battle River-Crowfoot riding instead of the Lakeland electoral district. For Lloydminster, the move will mean a switch from MP Shannon Stubbs as their member of parliament to representation by MP Damien Kurek.

Meetings to discuss the changes are to roll out in the fall with one planned for Lloydminster on September 8th at the Holiday Inn and Suites for 7 p.m.

Anyone wishing to make representation at the in-person public hearings needs to inform the Alberta Commission in writing by August 15th. Application details are online.

Canada’s constitution “requires that federal electoral districts be reviewed after each 10-year census to reflect changes and movements in Canada’s population,” states Elections Canada on their website.

Changes are also proposed to the present makeup of the Lakeland riding which according to the 2021 census has seen its population increase by 0.56 per cent to 115,854. Fort Saskatchewan will become part of the Lakeland riding under the change.

Overall the change would add three more seats for Alberta in Ottawa.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
