Lloydminster business building homes from recycled plastic bottles

A pre-fab construction solution being manufactured in Lloydminster is getting uptake across Alberta.

Ecoplast Solutions is ramping up production as word is getting around about the house being built from over one million recycled plastic bottle panels near Millet, Alberta.

Managing partner Kelly Rogers says the two-year old company makes composite plastic panels using discarded water bottles which are then put together on location. They are currently working on a two-storey duplex in Lloydminster.

“There’s going to be two of them side-by-side. So we have had some time to prepare for this one I guess. We got the walls up in a day and the roof went on in another five hours of assembly time I would say.”

The house in Millet is almost enclosed and then the builders will be working on the interior.

Jean-Marc d’Entremont, also a managing partner, is originally from Nova Scotia and brings that connection to their eastern Canada partners, JD Composites.  He talks about the advantages of their product.

“It’s a premium product that can’t rot or mould and there’s absolutely no way that water can penetrate it. So it’s superior in numerous aspects. It’s not superior in every aspect, but there is a lot where it’s above standard construction,” says d’Entremont.

Ecoplast Solutions won the Integrity trophy at this year’s Lloydminster Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards. Rogers says the recognition is a tribute to the team and the support they have behind them.

In the new year they expect to be doing more construction so the local factory will be busy over the winter months stockpiling the panels for the 2023 building season.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
