Lloydminster pilots Parkview skate trail

A skateable ice path is part of a pilot project to create new outdoor winter recreation for Border City families.

Recreation planners with the city of Lloydminster have opened a 750-metre frozen route located in an open space on 35 Street and 69 Avenue, south of Holy Rosary High School in the Parkview neighbourhood.

The path is open to the public and will remain open as long as weather permits, says city planners.

“After some time in building the ice surface, we’re excited to welcome the community in trying out this new winding and natural feeling skating trail,” says Jordan Newton, senior manager, parks and green spaces. “This is a new feature and a bit of an experiment for the city, so we’re encouraging users to exercise due caution. The path is intended for slow, leisurely skating, and we encourage everyone to wear helmets.”

Sticks and pucks are not permitted, say recreation planners. They also advise there is no lighting and personal lighting is recommended for night time skating.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
