A handful of students from the Winston Churchill School have had ties to the Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon and the school community wanted to have an activity to give back.
The school held a read-a-thon and raised $1900 to go to the Saskatoon facility.Â
The latest youngster to have a stay at the facility is grade two student Kyptan Lavoie who says he feels good about being able to raise the money with his schoolmates and give back.
Kyptan spent some time at Ronald McDonald House to find out the cause of his symptoms.
“We were figuring out why my stomach was hurting so bad and we stayed there – because IÂ had Diabetes,” says the seven-year old. He now wears a digital monitor to measure his blood sugar levels.
Experiences like these have become a teaching moment for the school community explains Grade two teacher Shella Stewart.
“So, with Kyptan learning all about his journey through Diabetes, his classmates and friends were also able to learn about his journey and offer support to recognize the symptoms of highs and lows – as he is going through it. So offering that support to their classmate.”
She adds it has been a win-win situation as they led their read-a-thon from April 5-21. Students worked on their reading skills. They learned about Diabetes and what to do in an emergency. They raised money and were able to give back.
The grade two classes are now applying for a citizenship award to further cement their civic involvement.
The school made the announcement about the funds raised from the read-a-thon during an assembly on Tuesday.
