Fire chief bids farewell, city to seek replacement

Lloydminster fire chief Leigh Sawicki has resigned from his role effective Sep. 18, 2023.

Assistant fire chief Bill Heesing will serve as acting fire chief, and Kristopher Hill will continue his role as assistant fire chief while the City of Lloydminster recruits a new fire chief, say city officials.

The city is commending Sawicki for his 43 months of service to the community.

His “contributions to enhancing firefighting services have been instrumental in shaping a safer city,” says Dion Pollard, City Manager, City of Lloydminster. “On behalf of the community and the City of Lloydminster, we wish him and his family the best in their future endeavours.”

The city noted that Sawicki’s experience teaching fire and medical courses throughout the Prairies and Ontario were assets to the department when the new Station No. 1 was designed. Sawicki also played a central role in the department’s transition to a composite department with a combination of full-time and paid, on-call firefighters.

The outgoing chief expressed that it was a privilege to serve the community.

“Together, with our dedicated team, we faced every challenge with resilience and a commitment to keeping Lloydminster safe. I am grateful for the support of the community,” said Sawicki.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
