Alberta RCMP is putting out some timely reminders with the first snow of the winter season.
Monday morning’s snow event was a light dusting in Lloydminster and area, but in other parts of Alberta, snowfall warnings were issued by Environment Canada, and in Leduc, police are advising of winter hazards affecting driving on the QEII Highway.
Police are advising road users to make that switch over to winter readiness. They suggest:
- Travel is not recommended in winter conditions if your vehicle has summer tires
- Ensure your vehicle is in a safe mechanical condition
- On a wet or slick surface, allow yourself at least three times the normal following distance to stop
- Keep your headlights on all the time
- Never use cruise control in winter conditions
- Remember that bridge decks may be slippery even when other parts of the highway are not
Also, keep an emergency road kit in your vehicle, with the following supplies:
- Blanket or sleeping bag
- Extra clothing and footwear
- Emergency non-perishable food
- Shovel
- Booster cables
- Ice scraper and snow brush
- Candle in a deep tin
- Waterproof matches
- First aid kit
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Fire extinguisher
- Paper towels or rags
- Road map and compass
- Sand, road salt, or kitty litter
Officers add to make sure your cell phone is charged especially in case of an emergency.
