Lloydminster seniors were dressed up to the nines on Saturday evening.
Around 160 older residents of the Border City went out to the fifth annual Senior Citizen’s Gala at Holy Rosary High School on Saturday evening. The theme of the event was “Aloha 2016,” which saw the atrium of the school filled with tables, strewn with flowers, and the ceiling overhead strung with coloured lights.
According to Holy Rosary Key Club president Amelia Benoit, the event is aimed at putting together a fun night for local seniors, with the tropical theme chosen as just one of the multiple themes selected over the last few years.
“We chose Hawaiian just because it was going to be later in spring,” said Benoit.
“Usually, we have it in October, but we didn’t end up doing that this year. Last year, we had Mardi Gras, before that there was a Night in Paris, and then I believe we had winter and fall themes before that.”
The night featured a Hawaiian meal, with a main dish of roasted pork and a series of tropical-themed courses. Guest speaker MLA Richard Starke also addressed the crowd, and the tables were later cleared to make way for dancing.
Benoit said the point of the event is to brighten the lives of residents in the Border City.
“Just to get it out into the community, and to brighten the lives of as many people as we can,” said Benoit.”
“It’s an amazing reward to see everybody out here participating and smiling, and you get to hear people talking about how amazing the food is and how great the decorations are, and you get to know that you put in the work for that, and the payoff is amazing, to hear those great things coming from the seniors.”
