WestJet sticks to plan to end flights to Lloydminster

WestJet continues to cite low numbers as the reason for ending its service to Lloydminster.

In the Governance and Priority Committee documents presented at Lloydminster City Council on Monday, Feb. 12, data shows that in 2019, the first full year of WestJet flights to Lloydminster Airport, the total number of passengers was 19,628.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, flights were impacted and never returned to levels seen since the service started on June 21, 2018.

In 2023 only 11,955 passengers used the WestJet Link to and from Lloydminster.

City representatives including the mayor met with WestJet in Calgary on Jan. 30. The city indicated that the airport’s runway had been upgraded with federal funds to facilitate the WestJet service and passengers could clear customs in Lloydminster ahead of travel. WestJet will cease flying to Lloydminster on April 15.

City Administration indicates it remains focused on maintaining the viability of the airport as a regional flight hub as it will be exploring other flight options.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
