Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr at Servus Sports Centre

Following a month of fasting for Ramadhan, Muslims are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr and the community in Lloydminster met at the Servus Sports Centre for prayer, sports, and lunch on Wednesday.

Taking time to reflect following the service, the new Imam serving the Lloydminster community shared that he has been here for about a month but felt “instantly at home.”

Imam Qasid Warraich, originally from Toronto says the month of Ramadhan was excellent as the community got together for healthy discussions and reflection on being better members of the society.

Looking at current concerns in the world the spiritual leader says, “We have to be the change we want to see.”

“We are to treat every single person with kindness. You are always going to run into people with differences, but it’s about how we deal with them.”

Imam Qasid served in Trinidad and Tobago in the southern Caribbean for five years before coming to Lloydminster. Looking at the situation with Palestine and Israel, he says, “We don’t want anyone dying. It hurts to see that. We want them to come to a solution in a peaceful way.”

Following the prayers in the OTS Room, the group went downstairs to the courts at the Servus Sports Centre for games like badminton before having an early afternoon lunch.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
