City of Lloydminster funds $180K for Olive Tree Homebase Housing Program

The City of Lloydminster will fund The Olive Tree Community Centre for $180,000 over three years for the Homebase housing strategy.

Mayor Gerald Aalbers sees the importance of supporting the work of the non-profit as it seeks to get people into a stable housing situation.

“The Homebase work is incredible, and I challenge our provincial governments to come back to the table one more time – they have been asked for the last six months by myself and council to support more Homebase workers. I challenge both provinces,” says Aalbers.

The program can assist some 10-20 clients and has already managed to get some 20 people off the streets.

“I’ll be sharing this story with both the governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan. We have got a model, maybe you should take a look at it. And it’s not the city’s model. It’s a non-profit group,” says Aalbers.

The three-year funding will support the staff that manages the Homebase program.

Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
