MyLloydminsterNow has reached out to the 14 candidates running for the six positions on Lloydminster City Council in the November 13 city-wide elections. Here are the views of Sara Christie.
Question 1: Tell me who you are.
Christie: I am 41 years old and was born and bred in Lloydminster. I graduated high school from Lloyd Comp in 2001. I went away to the University of Calgary and received a bachelor of nursing degree, graduating with Distinction and landing myself on the dean’s list. After losing my father to cancer at the age of 22, I chose to move back home after finishing university and remain here close to my mother and family. I have 3 boys who play hockey. I worked as a registered nurse at the Lloydminster Hospital for 16 years and recently resigned from my position to pursue my passion in life to change the world and make it a better place for my kids.
Question 2: Why do you want to be a city councillor?
Christie: Lloyd is poised for major change. This city needs an overhaul from top to bottom. Good people need to be voted into office so we can make this city a better place like it used to be. It’s a completely different place than when I grew up and we need to get back to our roots. Lloyd was founded on good conservative, hard-working values where everyone cared about making this city the best place to live. We will get there again soon.
Question 3: Colleen Young, candidate for the Saskatchewan Party has said, “Our hospital was built for 15,000 people back in 1986 and has not seen significant expansion. Previous ministers of health have recognized the need to expand the hospital in order to serve patients better. That is another aspect that I would like to see done.”
What are your thoughts on a new or expanded hospital in Lloydminster?
Christie: As a registered nurse who worked there for 16 years, I have seen tremendous amounts of change to the detriment. It is a very complex situation being on the border of two provinces. Yes, there needs to be major expansions and overhaul to our hospital and our healthcare in Lloydminster.
Question 4: What is your plan to deal with homelessness and the unhoused?
Christie: This is a major concern for our city that affects all of us. We are all in this together and we need to all come together to find the best solution for everyone. We need to consult with local people who work directly with their needs to figure out what will be best for our city. We also need to consult with locals (property owners and business owners) who are directly impacted by the current crisis.
Question 5: What are your thoughts on dealing with crime and insecurity?
Christie: A lot needs to be done to improve our ability to deal with the crime that is rampant here right now. Collaboration between the police department, bylaw, Citizens on Patrol, business owners and property owners has to be at the forefront in order to effectively deal with this crisis.
Question 6: Final thoughts.
Christie: I have loved and hated this city multiple times throughout my life. But Lloyd is my home, and I am called to do everything I can do to make this city great once again.
