Viking man faces kidnapping charges in Vermilion court

A suspect from Viking is to answer abduction charges in Vermilion Provincial Court after police arrested him and rescued the victims.

On Nov. 13, shortly after 5:00 p.m., Viking and Wainwright RCMP responded to a 911 call from a distressed victim who said that she and her 12-year-old daughter had been abducted by a family friend.

The investigation revealed that the mother and child were being held against their will inside of a moving vehicle. Police were able to remain in contact with the victim throughout the incident.

Eyewitnesses say the suspect was driving the vehicle recklessly and acting irrationally. When police located the vehicle, officers said it failed to stop.

The spike belt had to be used to bring the vehicle to a halt. The victims were released, and the driver of the vehicle was arrested without incident.

Viking resident, 66-year-old John William Orban is charged with:

  • Abduction of a person under 14
  • Adult kidnapping without a firearm
  • Two counts of forcible confinement
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Flight from police

John Orban was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. He is to return on Nov. 18, 2024, to the Alberta Court of Justice in Vermillion.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the Viking RCMP at 780-336-3441.
