Robots challenge LPSD obstacle course

The robots were the stars of the show as five teams from two schools with the Lloydminster Public School Division challenged each other to see which robot could get around the obstacle course fastest.

“We got 2:00:16 and 2:04 so that’s pretty good numbers,” says grade 6 College Park student, Jake Pretty.

Jake says his team of four was excited about their times around the track as they moved to the next challenge to use the robot’s claw to lift blocks.

The teams built the robots over three hours. Robotics team coach at College Park Elementary, Cornelius Krahn, shared the importance of building teamwork as the students navigated the challenge.

“I know the kids have learned some teamwork. They have to work on their communication skills, compromising, and expressing their ideas clearly and concisely.”

The challenge was not without its disagreements, but Krahn noted the youngsters were able to agree on the way forward and find resolution.

“Practice it now in a safe environment, and that’s something you can apply in your adult life,” says Krahn.

Cenovus Cares was approached by the LPSD to volunteer to support the initiative.

“We’ve provided about six people. And with that, the school gets a $1,000 grant from Cenovus,” says Todd McLean with Cenovus Cares. The volunteer arm of the energy company will offer similar support to any non-profit that approaches them.

“We have been doing this across the city. Any organization – schools, charities, or non-profits can reach out.”

Grade 6s from College Park and ES Laird were involved in the first LPSD Robotics Competition. The LPSD hopes to expand the contest to grades 7 and 8 in the new year.

The Fridge Raiders from College Park will get the bragging rights as they won with 51 points over three rounds of the contest. Their robot covered the obstacle course in 1:58:16.
