A few more Saskatchewan communities including Maidstone now have access to fibre-optic internet, as the SaskTel infiNET service has come to their area. This allows internet speeds of up to a Gigabit per second, says SaskTel.
Newly elected MLA for Cut Knife-Turtleford James Thorsteinson, SaskTel’s vice president of business sales and solutions, David Ekstrand, and mayor of Maidstone Brennan Becotte were on hand in Maidstone on Friday, Dec. 6 to welcome the new communities into the high-speed internet age.
“This is a huge step forward for the residents of Maidstone. The world revolves around connectivity and the faster, the better. I am pleased that our government and SaskTel have committed to providing access to fibre optic internet in rural communities across the province,” said Thorsteinson.
Maidstone, Buena Vista, Clavet, Foam Lake, Grand Coulee, Kinookimaw, Lampman, Regina Beach, Rockglen, Shellbrook, and Waldheim are new communities with high-speed internet.
SaskTel expects most homes in these areas will get the infiNET service by the end of January next year.
Given varying needs “it will take several months” before all customers will be able to convert to the new system, notes the crown corporation. You may check for availability on the SaskTel website.
SaskTel is spending nearly $440 million in 2024/25 and more than $2 billion over the next five years to expand the infiNET network.
