Petition to bring back King

An online petition in support of basketball coach Chris King has brought in nearly 3,000 signatures and counting.

Listed on Change.org as having started on Dec. 10, King was relieved of coaching duties by Lakeland College on Dec. 5. The College which had been conducting an internal investigation has indicated that it will not be making any more statements on the matter.

The players have stood behind the coach and forfeited two games in support rather than take to the court. The team is still tied for first in the ACAC.

“Under King’s leadership, the Lakeland Rustlers women’s basketball program has flourished, boasting an impressive record of achievements,” states the College’s website.

King, in almost two decades at the college, is a six-time ACAC Coach of the Year and a two-time CCAA Coach of the Year. The women’s basketball program is number one at the Canadian college level with two national titles and three ACAC gold medals among other achievements.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
