Astec Safety Challenge underway at Lloydminster Curling Club

The Astec Safety Challenge officially kicked off on Wednesday, Jan. 8 with Day 1 draws rolling throughout the day.

One game in particular has the local rink and community still buzzing.

World ranked 132 and Lloydminster representative Team deConnick-Smith drew a tough game-two match up against world ranked #4 Brad Gushue. It’s a classic David and Goliath story.

The deConnick-Smith rink came to play as things would be decided in the 8th and final end. Gushue needed a near-button shot to draw against three deConnick-Smith rocks. He ended up making it and ultimately winning the game by only one single point.

Also representing the Lloydminster Curling Club on the deConnick-Smith team is local 15-year-old Jax Robson.

In their final game of the day, deConnick-Smith took on world ranked number 25 squad, Reid Carruthers out of Manitoba. The local rink would grab a win there defeating Carruthers 7-1 in seven ends.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
