Drop everything and read

Guest readers will be at your child’s school over the next few days as Literacy Week is underway.

The Lloydminster Public School Division is thrilled to celebrate literacy.

“Our schools are hosting activities like ‘Drop Everything and Read,’ guest readers, literacy bingo, and dress-up like your favourite character days. All these activities are aimed at getting kids excited about reading. It’s a fun way to inspire a lifelong love of literacy,” says the LPSD.

In Saskatchewan, this year’s selected book is “Fox and Bear” by author and artist Miriam Körner. Fox and Bear explore their connection to the forest with concepts in line with the national theme, “Learn to be Green, Together.”

“Family literacy is fundamental to developing strong language and communication skills in our children and helps increase the quality of life and success in education,” says Education Minister, Everett Hindley. “This week provides an opportunity for families to explore the many ways literacy can be incorporated into daily activities.”

Gravelbourg-based Collège Mathieu will again provide province-wide French language resources related to the 2025 theme of “Apprendre à être vert, ensemble” using the book, “La mélodie des petits fruits” by author and artist Michaela Goade. The book is about a girl and her grandmother gathering gifts from the earth.

Family Literacy Day is January 27, and January 25 to 31 is Family Literacy Week.

Gerry has lived in Lloydminster since winter 2010. That detail is important as coming from the Caribbean he did not see green grass until May. Now an Alberta/Western Canada resident, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger proponent of Lloydminster than the news guy that appreciates a healthy dose of rock music and dress code leather. His mantra is focus on one thing and do it well.
