Protect your home against ice dams

Get out the shovel and if you don’t have a roof rake then you may want to get one. And at minimum check eavestroughs and down spouts.

With the freeze and thaw cycle of this early springlike weather, there is concern for homeowners to prevent seepage not just from snow piled against their home but also from the snow on top the house, and the risk of ice dams forming on the roof.

Since not all insurance policies protect against the damage caused by ice dams, it’s important for homeowners to do some preventative maintenance while checking on what their policy does cover.

SGI Canada reminds homeowners to give that melting snow somewhere to go and not in your home.

The tip list includes:

  • Remove snow from your roof
  • Check and clear eaves and downspouts
  • Remove snow that may be piled up around your foundation to about two metres away to prevent seepage into your basement
  • Check your sump pump and backwater valve on your sewer line if your home has these
  • Overall, manage any ice and snow build up around your home and sidewalks for your own safety and that of your community
