Alberta expanding provincial sunshine list

The provincial government is expanding the disclosure of public-sector salaries.

The salary information of around 150 agencies, boards and commissions are required to be publicly disclosed for employees who earn more than $125,000 a year in total compensation, as well as all compensation paid to appointees of boards. This form of accountability is already used in other provinces and jurisdictions, such as Ontario and British Columbia.

“Albertans deserve to know how their tax dollars are being spent,” said Minister of Finance Joe Ceci in a supplied statement.

“That’s why our government is developing a new executive compensation framework to apply to agencies, boards and commissions in the future. This will ensure greater accountability, consistency and transparency for Alberta taxpayers.”

The information will be published on the web pages of the public-sector bodies impacted by the disclosure threshold, with links to the disclosure pages for each agency, board or commission added to the central government page as public-sector bodies have their information posted online. The work is aimed to be completed by June 30, which is the deadline for the disclosure.

The information will remain online for a minimum of five years. Salary disclosures for government employees will also be posted online on June 30 of this year.
