Harlan Road, Onion Lake on evacuation standby

A wildfire which started on Sunday, May 4 in Onion Lake is prompting a standby to evacuate order for people in the Harlan Road area.

With the dry, windy conditions, the fire has spread to some 1,400 hectares, says the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA).

Onion Lake Cree Nation has declared a local state of emergency due to the wildfires. Residents may contact Carol Harper, disaster coordinator, at 639-343-7717.

If the evacuation order is given, residents may go to the OLCN Communiplex Arena lobby.

Fire crews have been battling the blaze, but the near 70 km/h winds on Wednesday, May 7 have not supported their efforts. Still crews indicate that the fire is 90 per cent contained.

Residents have been asked to stay off the roads to allow emergency crews to fight the blaze.

Anyone needing emergency help is asked to call 306-344-4444.
