The Lloydminster RCMP are investigating after a commercial property in the west end of city was broken into on Monday night.
According Corporal Tammy Hollingsworth, spokesperson for the local detachment, police were called to a commercial building in the far west end of the Power Centre in the early hours of July 5, after a report of a break and enter was made.
It was found that entry was made to the building via a pried-open front door. Once the perpetrators were inside, the space was ransacked, with bags torn open, doors opened, and materials scattered on the floor. Police believe the crime was committed in search of petty cash contained in the property. Despite the property still being worked on, no power tools were removed from the building. Whoever broke into the property left empty-handed.
During the break and enter, an attempt was also made to tunnel through the drywall to a neighbouring nail salon. The attempt was unsuccessful. It is also not known if the perpetrators used their hands to dig through the drywall or one of the power tools in the building.
At this stage in the investigation, police are still searching for any information which could help to locate suspects. The forensics section is also looking into the case.
As for the last time police in Lloydminster had to deal with a tunneling attempt in their investigations, Hollingsworth indicated it was a rare occurrence.
“We haven’t seen anything like this for a while, I can’t even recall an incident where they (the perpetrators) have tried to go into neighboring buildings,” said Hollingsworth.
“It’s not something that we see, definitely not, but they were looking for money, looking for cash. That’s what we suspect, at this point.”
