A nearly five-year long investigation into the murder of a Herschel, Sask, resident has been concluded with the arrest of a man from Bluffton, Alta.
The case in question was that of Carol King, who went missing back in the summer of 2011. King was last heard from on the afternoon of August 6, 2011, and later attempts to contact her were unsuccessful. Following those unsuccessful attempts, police were notified and the RCMP began an investigation into her disappearance.
Four days after the investigation began, RCMP Air Services conducted an aerial search in the area, and King’s PT Cruiser was found around 2.5 km east of her home near an abandoned yard, submerged in a slough. While the vehicle was recovered, there were no signs of King found. Further searches and inquiry failed to find any additional information.
Two weeks later, residents of the area found King’s remains in a wooded area, six km away from the location of her vehicle.
The investigation then proceeded for the next five years, with no named suspects until this past Tuesday, when police announced that 53 year-old Joseph “David” Caissie of Bluffton, Alberta was arrested and charged in the nearly five year-long investigation into King’s death.
According to information released by police, investigators from multiple detachments and units, including the Rosetown and Saskatoon RCMP, the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team, Police Dog Services, Forensic Identification Section, Search and Rescue, Air Services and the Major Crime and Historical Case Unit, were involved in the investigation into the case. The police also thanked the public for their assistance.
After Caisse appeared in court yesterday on one count of first-degree murder and a second count of offering an indignity to a human body, his lawyer told the press that his client plans to plead not guilty.
