Man in custody following police standoff

One man is in custody, following a police standoff in the west end of the Border City.

According to Constable Grant Kirzinger, who was present at the scene of the incident, police responded to a call of a distressed male in a residence, near the intersection of 66 Avenue and 67 Avenue.

Social media chatter and police radio traffic indicated that the incident began around 3:00 p.m. A heavy police presence was in place around the residence, with armed officers taking up multiple vantage points around the home. The block on which the house sat was also sealed off.

Kirzinger said that police responded to the scene with both police and public safety factors taken into consideration. He also said that residents of the sealed-off block were told to get into their basements, and not evacuated from the area, and ruled out the possibility of the standoff being in response to a hostage situation.

Throughout the course of the incident, officers were making attempts to communicate with the distressed male, and two other people were detained after leaving the residence. Around 4:00 p.m., the unarmed male in question was taken into custody by police, without incident. He was subsequently taken to hospital.
