An 18 year old man has been charged after drunkenly smashing a car into a light pole on Saturday night.
The driver of the vehicle was Dakota Whitstone, a resident of Onion Lake, Saskatchewan. According to Constable Grant Kirzinger of the Lloydminster RCMP, Whitstone has been charged with five counts of failing to comply, one count of impaired operation, one count of dangerous operation, one count of failing to remain, and one count of operating a vehicle without a license.
Whitstone was at the wheel of a vehicle which crashed into a traffic light pole at the intersection of 52 Avenue and 44 Street just after 11 p.m. on Saturday night.
Shortly after the accident, the vehicle burst into flames, which were put out by members of the Lloydminster Fire Department. Whitstone was located and arrested north of the accident scene at the intersection of 48 Street and 54 Avenue, having exited the vehicle prior to the fire breaking out.
At the time, 106.1 The Goat caught up with Jordan Hennick, an eyewitness who described what they had heard from Whitstone following the crash. Hennick had been in the area of the crash at the time of the incident with friends, and went out to check out what took place.
“We were parked off to the side when the driver came out (of the vehicle),” said Hennick.
“He took off on foot somewhere, he was pretty shaken up, but he was mad more about the beer he had spilled than anything.”
Whitstone was taken to hospital after being arrested. Police did not find any signs of other occupants of the vehicle, and no major injuries were reported from the scene.
