Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has proposed a 10-dollar per tonne carbon tax for all of Canada by 2018.
The plan is for it to increase by 10-dollars a year until it reaches 50 in 2022. Trudeau says provinces and territories will have the option of either implementing a carbon tax or a cap-and-trade system, and a choice of how they use the revenue.
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley has already responded, saying the province will not support the climate change proposal without new pipelines. She says Albertans are asking for the landlock to be broken in one direction or another so the province can get back on its feet.
If provinces don’t bring in a carbon price on their own, the federal government will impose one on them, returning all revenue to the province.
