Amber Alert ended after young girl found deceased

An Amber Alert out of Saskatchewan has been cancelled after the body of a missing seven year old girl was found.

Nia Eastman is believed to have been abducted by her father early Thursday morning. She was supposed to have been returned to her mother Wednesday night.

Adam Jay Eastman’s body was found dead of self-inflicted injuries on a rural property east of Smeaton around 5:30 a.m. The search for Nia was called off Thursday afternoon after her body was found in a Choiceland home. There has been no word yet on the connection between the Eastmans and where their bodies were found.

The following is the full statement given to the public by police in Regina this afternoon.

Good afternoon and thank you for being here this afternoon. My name is Insp. Jennifer Ebert and I am the Officer in Charge of the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crime Unit. I am not here with good news this afternoon. I would like to begin by expressing our heartfelt condolences to Nia’s family and the communities of Smeaton, Choiceland, Snowden, and Nipawin.

This was not the outcome all of us were hoping for and our thoughts are with the family and communities.

Today, at approximately 12:45, investigators located Nia deceased in a residence in Choiceland, Saskatchewan.

A short time ago, our investigators met with the family and we have ensured victim service support is available to them.

I understand there will be many questions about the circumstances surrounding Nia’s death. Our investigators are working diligently to determine exactly what took place between the time Nia was picked up from school by her father and when she was located today.

Autopsies have been ordered for Nia and Adam Eastman to assist with determining the time and cause of death. At this point in the investigation, there is no indication anyone else is involved in Nia’s death and we are not seeking any suspects.

As I said earlier, all of us were hoping and praying Nia would be located safely. This is the goal we have every time we ask the public and media for their help during an Amber Alert. This is a difficult day for all of us.
