Lloydminster city council cuts pay by two per cent

The city council for Lloydminster will be cutting back their pay.

The two per cent pay cut came in response to a motion from Councillor Stephanie Brown Munro, who brought it forward close to the end of Monday’s meeting. Munro had wanted to see council undergo the same salary changes as City employees, who have had a system of deferred leave put in place across all union and non-union workers.

Under the deferred leave system, two per cent of employees pay would be held, to be used when the employee would be off on deferred leave, in a total of 25 pay periods. This would be in place for all of 2017 and 2018.

“I just think we need to follow suit,” said Munro.

“All out of scope (workers) have taken a two per cent decrease, as well as the union contract that was just in place. I think it’s only appropriate that we take that two per cent decrease as well.”

During the municipal election, every single council candidate said they would take a pay cut if needed.

Councillors for the City of Lloydminster are paid $31,800, and the mayor’s salary is set at $90,000. The total money saved by the cut is around $5,616.
