Treads for Life Looking to Raise Awareness for Families Affected by Workplace Tragedy

Treads for Life will be taking place this Saturday. The annual event is to help raise awareness about families affected by workplace tragedies. It’s part of the national charity Threads of Life. The difference in Lloydminster is instead of just doing a walk, there is also a 300 km motorcycle ride. Last year was the inaugural year for the motorcycle ride and they say there was a much a larger turn out than they expected with about 35 bikes involved.

Rob Munro, Vice Chair of the Lakeland Regional Safety Committee says the event isn’t about raising money, but awareness.

“There is a real possibility that we may be able to generate some donations for the charity but at this point, while that’s part of what we’re pushing for, not our main objective. We want the awareness.”

He adds that this organization is the missing step in the process when it comes to reviewing workplace tragedies.

“Personally, I’ve never been directly involved in a fatality but I have done through safety, investigations of fatalities and it’s just a horrific event and if I’m looking at it from the perspective of an employer or a coworker, I can’t imagine how a family would deal with that.”

The ride will kick off at 10 am from Lethal Motor Sports. The 5km walk will start at 11 at the park just behind the store. There will be a barbecue to follow. This year there will also be a kid zone.

“We’re trying to make this a much more family inclusive event because it is supporting the families of workplace tragedy.”

The cost to participate is $15. You can sign up here.
