Lloydminster Youth Council Sworn In

With some new faces, the Lloydminster Youth Council is ready to get going for another year.

“It’s so exciting to have new members joining us this year, some new ideas, some new people with new views and new opinions and it’s just so, so exciting having them come on to our team,” says returning member and Chair of the Lloydminster Youth Council Lizelle Van Vuuren.

She adds, “I chose to come back because I enjoyed it so much last year and just being able to be so involved is so important to me. I’m very happy to be back and I’m also happy to be back inspiring new people this year.”

The LYC focuses on engaging youth in the community and works with City Council as a liaison on behalf of youth in the Border City. The council swore in 14 members Wednesday evening and is looking to build on successes from last year.

“We’re focusing more on some more community activities and bringing some of our more successful events back from last year, so get some annual stuff started up and then have more community activities for our youth as well,” says Van Vuuren.

Coordinator Grant Kirzinger says the response to the LYC has been varied throughout the community.

“The youth have been very invested and involved in what we’re able to do, making that a success. We’ve had a lot of business partners come alongside us, with support, financial support and just a whole bunch of different ways to make sure that the youth have their voices heard and are able to reach the community.”

To become a member of the Youth Council, the kids had to submit an application and go through an interview process.

Kirzinger says, “we’re really excited, we saw a lot of amazing kids leave the council to graduate and move on, so we wish them all the best. We’re really excited for the new energy, the new excitement to show up. This year we’re definitely expecting a lot of great things.”
