First Nation Reserves Have No Fire Safety Standard

The Aboriginal Firefighters Association says that there are very few regulations governing fire safety on First Nations land. In the wake of the deadly house fire on the Makwa Sahgeichan First Nation, many questions remain about how fire safety is governed on reserves. Executive Director of the Aboriginal Firefighters Association Blaine Wiggins told Goat News that while fire fighting is funded nationally, no set of rules exist – something his organization is trying to chance. He also said that contracts for external fire departments are negotiated by the community. The Loon Lake Fire Department didn’t respond to the house fire last week because the reserve hadn’t paid their bills.
