Saskatchewan RCMP launches online crime reporting tool province-wide

The Saskatchewan RCMP has launched a province-wide online crime reporting tool, after a successful pilot in a handful of cities and towns.

The website was tested in Swift Current, Yorkton, Kindersley, Melfort, Humboldt and Spiritwood back in February, and is now open to any Saskatchewan RCMP jurisdiction area. The RCMP says all crimes reported are important, and ones reported using this resource could not only provide a clearer picture of the types and number of crimes occurring in a specific area.

It could also impact future police initiatives and determine officer deployment in RCMP detachments and units.

Residents will be able to report these crimes and concerns online using the RCMP website:

  •   Damage and mischief to property or a vehicle under $5,000
  •  Theft of a bicycle under $5,000
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Theft from a vehicle under $5,000
  • Lost or found property

The crime must also meet certain criteria to be reported online, including that the items damaged or stolen cost under $5,000 or that to repair, there were no witnesses or suspects and that there are no items involving personal identity, firearms, license plates or decals.

Any crime that doesn’t meet these criteria must be reported in person or over the phone, and the RCMP adds that crime reported online will be treated just as seriously as any other.

The same program was launched in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions back in the summer of 2020.
